If you teach women, women's health fitness is already part of your job. Pregnancy, the return after a baby, perimenopause and menopause walk into your class whether or not anyone names them. This guide covers the basics a fitness professional should have straight, where your role stops, and how our WMN+ series fits in. One thing first: STRENGTH Collective does not offer a women's health certification, and this page is not one.

Think across a life, not a twelve-week block

Most programs are written for a phase. A client's body works on a much longer timeline. WMN+ and MN+ share one approach: what a working professional needs to understand about training, recovery and nutrition across a life, rather than across a twelve-week block. The same client might come to you training for a race, return pregnant, come back a year later with very different goals, and stay with you into her fifties. Your coaching has to change with her.

Where your job stops

Our job is movement, and diagnosis belongs to someone licensed for it. When a client brings up pain, a symptom that's bothering her or anything that sounds medical, the next call is to her own clinician, which around a pregnancy usually means her ob-gyn or her midwife. For background you can hand over, ACOG (the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) keeps a plain-language FAQ on exercise during pregnancy, plus another on exercise after pregnancy. The first one closes by telling readers to take further questions to their own ob-gyn, which is the right note for us to strike too.

A better intake

Long forms get skimmed. We'd keep it to three questions. What's changed lately, whether that's sleep, energy or how training feels? What does she want out of sessions at the moment? And is there anything she'd like you to know? Write the answers down so she isn't repeating herself in March.

Three lanes at once

WMN+ covers training, recovery and nutrition together on purpose, because a shift in one usually drags the other two along. On food, know your limits; a client who needs a real nutrition plan should be working with a registered dietitian. On the movement side we'd start with breath and posture, and at PLTS+ Holly Swanson's workshop on Pilates breathing technique and posture is one place to dig in. For upper-body discomfort, see the workshop on neck and shoulder pain in Pilates.

Watch your words

Small choices in language matter. "Getting your body back" suggests something was lost. "Building back up" says the same thing minus the baggage. In a group, never guess someone's age or life stage out loud. What she shares is up to her.

Where WMN+ fits

WMN+ is the STRENGTH Collective women's health series. In 2026 it met in Chicago in May and in Atlanta in September, and its sister series MN+ hosted a men's mental health fireside chat in Chicago in June. Dates and cities for the next WMN+ and MN+ events are being confirmed on the WMN+ / MN+ page. For more ways to keep learning, read our guide on Pilates continuing education, or see every series on the events page.
